The Dating Diaries, Episode 1: Sonic Drive Thru

I’d like to introduce you to the latest addition to my blog. May I present:

The Dating Diaries

The Dating Diaries is a little video series I plan to produce every now and then about the funny things that happen in the world of single people. I hope you enjoy this funny little gem and all of the future ones too. And here is the first episode. I call it “Sonic Drive Thru.”

Why I’m Obsessed with Wicked the Musical

Have I mentioned that I’m OBSESSED with Wicked the Musical? If that’s news to you, then it probably means you haven’t spent more than 10 minutes around me. Yes, it takes approximately 10 minutes for my obsession to manifest itself. I feel like that’s the perfect amount of time before I make people start to question my sanity.

My obsession all started last year with a sister’s weekend in California to see Wicked. I’m a fan of musicals and all, so I figured I would like it, but I also thought it couldn’t be as good as everyone says it is. Uh, I was wrong.

Something in it struck a chord with me and I began to plot when I could see it again. And that’s how my day trip to Boise came about.

Fast forward a couple of months, and you find me learning how to wakeboard to songs like “Defying Gravity” and “Thank Goodness,” both from the Wicked soundtrack.

Are you starting to get the picture about this obsession?

Now fast forward to July 2012 when Wicked came to Salt Lake City! Yes, I’d had tickets for more than a year. Yes, I could barely contain my excitement. No, I did not sleep with the tickets under my pillow (as far as you know).

Once again, the show did not disappoint. This time, my sister and I watched it from the fifth row. Seriously, I was close enough to run up on stage and hug everyone. Of course, I didn’t do that because, well, even I have limits.

Aaaaaaannnnd, a fun fact I learned in all of my obsession is that you can meet the actors at the stage door after the show. I did it in Boise and made my sister promise she would go to the stage door with me in Salt Lake.

It’s fun to meet the actors, and I figure it’s nice for them too. I mean, that way they can put a face with a name in case a restraining order is necessary. See how helpful I am?

As if that wasn’t enough, my friend Quade had an extra ticket one night, so he took me! How great is that?

So plenty of people have asked me why the obsession. Well, first of all, I love musicals, and this one has a great storyline, catchy music, it’s funny AND makes you think. Second, I have a pretty addictive personality, so when I find something I like, I really latch on to it. But there’s definitely more to it than those factors. Without giving any of the plot away (SERIOUSLY, YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET?!?!), for me it’s this:

Wicked is the story of a girl who just wants people to see her for who she really is, and I identify with that.

Really, can’t we all identify with that?

Don’t we all just want to be seen and accepted for who we are?

So with that, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite lines from Wicked:

And that’s the story of how and why I came to be obsessed with Wicked the Musical.
