Catching Up

I had a birthday! It’s true, it happens to all of us at least once a year. I was having a great debate as to whether or not this would be my last birthday. After much contemplation, I have decided that I will continue having birthdays, but this is the last year I’m going to age. I feel like that’s a great plan.

I was planning on taking the day off work, which then turned into a half day off, which then turned into me working until 6. Oh well. Our Christmas catalog always goes to press right around my birthday time so life always gets chaotic right about then. A couple of days earlier my boss and coworkers had brought in bagels to celebrate with, and that day some other coworkers brought in cupcakes. I was also able to slip away and meet up with a friend for a little bit. So, even though I had to work, it wasn’t so bad.

That night I met up with a small group of friends and went out to dinner. I had picked Red Robin because it’s my favorite, and because I get a free birthday burger (I joined their e-mail list just for that reason). We picked the Red Robin in West Valley because it was the closest – big mistake! I’d never been to that one before and it turned out to be a disaster. I won’t go into details, but it wasn’t that busy, and there were only 8 of us, but it still took us over an hour and a half to get our food! Seriously, it was ridiculous! By the time it came we were so starving that we ate it all in about 15 minutes, but it still took us about another half hour to get our checks settled and get out. So I don’t recommend that particular location.

We did manage to entertain ourselves though. We played a couple great rounds of Duck, Duck, Goose! Made friends with a guy at a table behind us who, despite his arriving an hour after we did got his food first and left before we had even gotten our checks. Oh, and there was a brief time where I contemplated riding a decorative carousel horse there. Everyone was disappointed I didn’t do it, but I promise it would have tipped over and that would have been the end of both the horse and myself.

This is one of the two half-full baskets of fries the waitress finally brought us when we asked for them after sitting in the restaurant for over an hour. I do love their fries though! And their onion straws on their burgers! Boy do I love a good cheeseburger.

Despite having to work and encountering dining difficulties, it was a pretty good day. It was low-key and filled with friends and phone calls from family.
As a follow-up, this past week I had a belated birthday dinner with a few other friends at the Cheesecake Factory. I’d never been there before – delicious! And that’s the be-lated low-down on my special day.
