So, there was one major item on the Summer Fun Bucket Book that I was not able to complete. And lest you think I’m a total and complete failure, I have a good reason. Please, let me explain.
One of the big things on the list was to run a half marathon. I have been talking about doing this for a couple of years now but just haven’t made it happen. I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, but I hate running. Well, this summer I finally started to get in my running groove. I still didn’t like it very much, but it was tolerable, and I was plugging away. Then, one day, “The Incident” happened.
I was out running one night (Mom, if you’re looking at this, that should read “I was out running in broad daylight with lots of people around me.”) and I was feeling great about it. The furthest distance I’d ever been before without stopping was just over five miles. Tonight, my goal was to go six.
When I hit six miles I noticed my leg was hurting a bit, but I was feeling pretty good overall, so I kept going, and going, and going. In the end I ran more than 7 miles! A seriously big deal for me. I could have gone further, but at that point my leg was really hurting so I decided to stop.
Fast forward two weeks . . . my leg is still killing me and the race is less than a week away. I get talked into going to see a doctor. The diagnosis, a stress fracture in the middle of my leg. The treatment, wearing a giant boot for three weeks. Awesome.
So, I ended up having to skip the race. Kind of a sad day. But I am determined to conquer it one day!
